He was born in Máramarossziget, which is now part of Romania, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged their son's musical talents from an early age. Frid began studying piano and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest when he was just 14 years old. He studied with some of the most renowned musicians of the time, including Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók. He also studied conducting with Fritz Busch in Dresden, Germany. In 1928, Frid moved to Amsterdam, where he lived for the rest of his life. He became a Dutch citizen in 1947. In Amsterdam, he continued to compose and perform, and he also taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Frid's music is characterized by its lyricism and emotional depth. He was influenced by the music of his native Hungary, as well as by the music of other composers of his time, such as Bartók and Stravinsky. His works include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and vocal music. One of Frid's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 2, which he composed in 1942. The concerto is known for its virtuosic piano writing and its emotional intensity. It has been performed by many of the world's leading pianists, including Vladimir Ashkenazy and Martha Argerich. Another notable work by Frid is his Symphony No. 2, which he composed in 1953. The symphony is a powerful and dramatic work that reflects the composer's experiences during World War II. It has been performed by many orchestras around the world, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Frid also composed a number of works for chamber ensembles, including his String Quartet No. 2, which he composed in 1950. The quartet is a haunting and beautiful work that showcases Frid's skill at writing for strings. In addition to his work as a composer, Frid was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory for many years, and his students included some of the most prominent Dutch composers of the 20th century, such as Louis Andriessen and Ton de Leeuw. Frid's music has been performed and recorded by many of the world's leading musicians and orchestras. His legacy as a composer and teacher continues to be celebrated today, and his music remains an important part of the classical repertoire.More....
