He was the youngest of three children born to a Dutch father and a South African mother. His father was a businessman, and his mother was a music teacher who introduced him to the piano at a young age. De Groote showed an early talent for music, and he began taking piano lessons with his mother when he was just four years old. By the time he was six, he was already performing in public, and he went on to win several local piano competitions as a child. In 1970, de Groote moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied with renowned pianist Rosina Lhévinne, and he quickly established himself as a rising star in the classical music world. De Groote made his professional debut in 1974, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. In addition to his solo performances, de Groote was also a sought-after chamber musician. He frequently collaborated with other musicians, including violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. De Groote's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1989. He was just 36 years old when he died of complications from AIDS. Despite his short career, he left behind a legacy as one of the most talented and beloved pianists of his generation. Throughout his career, de Groote received numerous awards and accolades for his performances. In 1977, he won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which helped to launch his career on the international stage. He also won the Avery Fisher Prize in 1982, which is awarded annually to outstanding classical musicians in the United States. In addition, he was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by the South African government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. De Groote's recordings continue to be celebrated by classical music fans around the world. He was a strong advocate for AIDS awareness and research, and he worked tirelessly to raise funds for organizations that supported those affected by the disease.
