She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father recognized her talent for music at a young age and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Kaltofen began her musical education at the age of six, studying piano and violin. She showed exceptional talent and was soon performing in public concerts. At the age of 12, she won her first competition, the Berlin Youth Music Competition, and this marked the beginning of her successful career. In 1950, Kaltofen enrolled at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Walter Gieseking. She also studied with other notable musicians such as Wilhelm Kempff and Edwin Fischer. During her time at the university, Kaltofen won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland. After completing her studies, Kaltofen began performing in concerts across Europe and the United States. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, known for her expressive playing and technical skill. She performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Kaltofen's most notable performances was her debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1962. She received critical acclaim for her performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, and the New York Times praised her "brilliant technique and sensitive musicianship." Kaltofen was also a prolific recording artist, and she recorded many of the great works of classical music. Her recordings of the piano concertos of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms are considered some of the finest interpretations of these works. Throughout her career, Kaltofen received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1972, she was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin, and in 1982, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. She was also a member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Kaltofen continued to perform and record music well into her later years. She was known for her dedication to her craft and her commitment to preserving the legacy of classical music.
