He was the son of a Jewish family, and his father was a businessman. Steinman grew up in New York City and attended George W. Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. Steinman went on to study at Amherst College in Massachusetts, where he majored in English and music. While at Amherst, he formed a band called The Dream Engine, which played at local clubs and parties. After graduating from college, Steinman moved back to New York City and began working as a freelance composer and lyricist. In the early 1970s, Steinman began working with the singer Meat Loaf, and the two formed a close creative partnership that would last for decades. Their first collaboration was on the 1977 album Bat Out of Hell, which became a massive commercial success and remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. Steinman wrote all of the songs on the album, including the hit singles "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad." Steinman's work on Bat Out of Hell established him as one of the most innovative and influential composers of his generation.
