Eivind Gullberg Jensen is a Norwegian conductor who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on September 18, 1971, in Bergen, Norway, Jensen grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Jensen started playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the trumpet. Jensen's interest in conducting began when he was a teenager. He attended the Bergen Cathedral School, where he was a member of the school's orchestra. He also played in the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra's youth orchestra. After completing his secondary education, Jensen went on to study music at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. During his tenure, the orchestra recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Grieg's Piano Concerto with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. Jensen's international career began to take off in the mid-2000s. In 2006, he made his debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducting a program of works by Sibelius and Nielsen. He has since conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Jensen has also been a regular guest conductor at the BBC Proms, one of the world's most prestigious classical music festivals. He made his Proms debut in 2007, conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a program of works by Sibelius and Nielsen. He has since conducted many other Proms concerts, including a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in 2011. Jensen's repertoire is wide-ranging, but he is particularly known for his interpretations of Scandinavian composers such as Sibelius, Nielsen, and Grieg. He has also championed the music of contemporary composers, including Magnus Lindberg and Thomas Adès. Jensen has received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 2009, he was awarded the Sibelius Prize by the Finnish government for his contributions to the music of Jean Sibelius. In 2010, he was awarded the Grieg Prize by the Norwegian government for his contributions to the music of Edvard Grieg. He has also been awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit by the German government. Jensen is known for his energetic and passionate conducting style. He is often seen jumping and dancing on the podium, and his performances are known for their intensity and excitement.
