The group was formed by a group of government employees who shared a passion for classical music and wanted to create an outlet for their musical talents. The ensemble is made up of musicians from various government agencies, including the Department of Justice, the Department of State, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The founding members of the Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy were all accomplished musicians who had studied music at the university level and had performed in various orchestras and ensembles throughout their lives. They came together with the goal of creating a high-quality classical music ensemble that would showcase the talents of government employees and provide a unique cultural experience for the community. The ensemble's first performance was in 2006 at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The concert was a huge success, and the Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and unique blend of government and musical talent. Over the years, the Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy has performed at a variety of venues throughout the United States, including the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress. The ensemble has also performed internationally, with concerts in Canada, Mexico, and Europe. One of the highlights of the Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy's career was its performance at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Ball. The ensemble was selected to perform at the ball, which was attended by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy performed a variety of classical pieces, including works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. In addition to its performances, the Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy has also received numerous awards and accolades for its contributions to the arts. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts' Access to Artistic Excellence grant, which provided funding for the group's performances and outreach programs. The ensemble has also been recognized by the Washington Post and the Washington City Paper for its outstanding performances and contributions to the cultural community. The Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy is led by its conductor, Dr. Michael Votta Jr. Dr. Votta is an accomplished conductor and musician who has worked with a variety of orchestras and ensembles throughout his career. He is also a professor of music at George Mason University and has served as the music director of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble's repertoire includes a wide variety of classical music, ranging from Baroque to contemporary works. The Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy has also commissioned new works from contemporary composers, including a piece by composer and pianist Michael Torke. In addition to its performances, the Orchestra of the Sound Bureaucracy is committed to community outreach and education. The ensemble has worked with local schools and community organizations to provide music education and performance opportunities for young musicians.
