Born on May 5, 1985, in Riga, Latvia, Lakstigala showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. As a young musician, Lakstigala participated in many competitions and festivals, winning numerous awards and accolades. He was a regular participant in the Latvian National Cello Competition, where he won first prize in 1999, 2001, and 2003. He also won first prize in the International Cello Competition in Liezen, Austria, in 2002. Lakstigala continued his studies at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in cello performance in 2007. He then went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, Germany, where he earned a Master's degree in cello performance in 2010. Throughout his career, Lakstigala has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He has appeared as a soloist with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has also collaborated with conductors such as Andris Nelsons, Mariss Jansons, and Valery Gergiev. One of Lakstigala's most notable performances was his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 2012. He performed the cello concerto by Antonín Dvořák under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, receiving rave reviews for his virtuosic playing and emotional depth. In addition to his work as a cellist, Lakstigala is also an accomplished conductor. He has conducted many orchestras in Latvia and Germany, including the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as the principal conductor of the Riga Chamber Orchestra since 2015.
