Role:EnsembleGenre:ChamberVocalVoices of Change is a classical music ensemble based in Dallas, Texas. Founded in 1974, the ensemble has become one of the most respected and innovative chamber music groups in the United States. The ensemble is known for its commitment to contemporary music and has premiered over 300 new works by composers from around the world. The founding members of Voices of Change were violinist Ross Powell, cellist Gail Crosson, and pianist Jo Boatright. The ensemble was originally formed as a trio, but soon expanded to include other musicians. Over the years, the ensemble has had a rotating cast of members, but has always maintained a core group of musicians who are dedicated to the ensemble's mission. One of the highlights of Voices of Change's early years was its collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Art. The ensemble performed a series of concerts in the museum's galleries, playing music that was inspired by the artwork on display. This innovative approach to programming helped to establish Voices of Change as a unique and forward-thinking ensemble. In the 1980s, Voices of Change began to focus more on contemporary music. The ensemble commissioned new works from composers such as Joan Tower, John Corigliano, and George Crumb. These commissions helped to establish Voices of Change as a champion of new music and brought the ensemble national attention. One of the most significant moments in Voices of Change's history came in 1992, when the ensemble was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The ensemble performed a program of contemporary music, including works by John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Toru Takemitsu. The performance was a critical success and helped to establish Voices of Change as one of the leading contemporary music ensembles in the United States. In addition to its performances, Voices of Change has also been recognized for its educational outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with students of all ages, from elementary school to college, to introduce them to contemporary music and to encourage them to explore their own creativity. Over the years, Voices of Change has received numerous awards and accolades. In 1995, the ensemble was awarded the ASCAP-Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming. In 2004, the ensemble was awarded the Texas Medal of Arts for its contributions to the arts in Texas. In 2014, the ensemble was awarded the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's Classical Music Award for its commitment to contemporary music. Today, Voices of Change continues to be a vital and innovative force in the world of classical music. The ensemble's commitment to contemporary music and its dedication to education and outreach have helped to inspire a new generation of musicians and music lovers.More....
