He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Ptacek started playing the guitar at the age of 12 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Ptacek studied at the Prague Conservatory, where he received a solid foundation in classical guitar technique. He also studied composition with the renowned Czech composer Alois Haba. After completing his studies, Ptacek began performing as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe. In 1957, Ptacek won first prize at the International Guitar Competition in Paris, which launched his international career. He went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Ptacek was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the full range of expression from the guitar. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, which he played with great sensitivity and nuance. In addition to his performing career, Ptacek was also a prolific composer. He wrote over 100 works for the guitar, including solo pieces, chamber music, and concertos. His compositions were influenced by a wide range of styles, including classical, folk, and jazz. Ptacek was also a dedicated teacher and taught at the Prague Conservatory for many years. He was known for his patient and encouraging approach to teaching, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as guitarists. Throughout his career, Ptacek received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1989, he was awarded the Medal of Merit by the Czech Republic for his cultural achievements. He was also made an honorary member of the International Guitar Research Centre in London.
