Romain Leleu is a French classical trumpet player who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative approach to the instrument. Born on May 25, 1983, in Lille, France, Leleu began playing the trumpet at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he earned a first prize in trumpet performance. Leleu's career as a professional musician began in 2003 when he won the prestigious Maurice André International Trumpet Competition. This victory launched him onto the international stage, and he quickly became known for his technical skill and expressive playing. He has since performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Leleu's most notable performances was his debut at the BBC Proms in 2011, where he performed the world premiere of a new trumpet concerto by the British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. The performance was widely praised for Leleu's virtuosic playing and the innovative use of the trumpet in Turnage's composition. In addition to his work as a soloist, Leleu is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Ensemble. He is also a founding member of the Ensemble Convergences, a group dedicated to exploring the intersection of classical and contemporary music. Leleu's innovative approach to the trumpet has led him to collaborate with many contemporary composers, including Pascal Dusapin, Thierry Escaich, and Philippe Hersant. He has premiered many new works for the trumpet, and his recordings of contemporary trumpet music have been widely praised for their technical skill and musical sensitivity. In addition to his victory at the Maurice André International Trumpet Competition, he has also won the Young Soloist Prize at the International Toulon Competition and the First Prize at the International Brass Competition in Narbonne. He was also awarded the prestigious Victoires de la Musique Classique award in 2012 for his recording of trumpet concertos by Haydn and Hummel.
