He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1992 and a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1994. During his time at Eastman, Dettra studied with renowned organist David Craighead and conductor Donald Neuen. After completing his studies, Dettra began his career as a church musician, serving as the organist and choirmaster at several churches in the United States. He also worked as a freelance organist and conductor, performing in concerts and recitals across the country. Dettra's talent and hard work soon caught the attention of the classical music world, and he began to receive invitations to perform at major venues and festivals. In 2000, he was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas, Texas, where he served for over a decade.
