Scott Dettra is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a skilled organist, conductor, and composer. Born in 1970 in North Carolina, Dettra showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later took up the organ and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Dettra's talent and dedication to music led him to pursue a career in the field. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1992 and a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1994. During his time at Eastman, Dettra studied with renowned organist David Craighead and conductor Donald Neuen. After completing his studies, Dettra began his career as a church musician, serving as the organist and choirmaster at several churches in the United States. He also worked as a freelance organist and conductor, performing in concerts and recitals across the country. Dettra's talent and hard work soon caught the attention of the classical music world, and he began to receive invitations to perform at major venues and festivals. In 2000, he was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas, Texas, where he served for over a decade. During his time in Dallas, Dettra became known for his innovative programming and his commitment to promoting new music. He commissioned and premiered several works by contemporary composers, including Dan Locklair, Nico Muhly, and Judith Weir. Dettra's performances have been praised for their technical skill and emotional depth. He has been described as a "master of the organ" and a "brilliant interpreter of classical music." His recordings have received critical acclaim, and he has been nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance. In addition to his work as a performer, Dettra is also a respected conductor and composer. He has conducted several orchestras and choirs, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Bach Society. He has also composed several works for organ and choir, which have been performed by ensembles across the country. Dettra's contributions to the classical music world have been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome in Music Composition by the American Academy in Rome. He has also been awarded the John Rodland Memorial Organ Scholarship and the Ruth and Clarence Mader Memorial Scholarship. Today, Dettra continues to perform, conduct, and compose music. He is currently the Director of Music and Organist at the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City, where he oversees a vibrant music program and performs regularly in concerts and recitals. He is also a sought-after teacher and mentor, and has taught masterclasses and workshops at several universities and music schools.
