Harold Friedell was an American composer, organist, and choir director who made significant contributions to the world of classical music during the 20th century. Born on May 11, 1905, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, Friedell showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was raised in a musical family, and his father was a church organist who encouraged his son's musical pursuits. Friedell's musical education began at the age of 12 when he became a choirboy at the Church of the Resurrection in New York City. He continued his studies at the Institute of Musical Art (now known as the Juilliard School) and later at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Friedell was a gifted musician, and he excelled in his studies, earning numerous awards and accolades. After completing his studies, Friedell began his career as a church organist and choir director. He served as the organist and choirmaster at several churches in New York City, including the Church of the Holy Communion and St. Bartholomew's Church. He also served as the director of music at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he worked for over 20 years. Friedell's compositions were heavily influenced by his work as a church musician. He wrote numerous choral works, including anthems, motets, and hymns, many of which were written for use in church services. His music was known for its rich harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and expressive melodies. One of Friedell's most famous works is his Christmas cantata, "A Babe Is Born." The piece was first performed in 1934 and quickly became a holiday favorite. The cantata features a mix of traditional Christmas carols and original compositions, all arranged in Friedell's signature style. The piece has been performed by choirs around the world and remains a beloved part of the Christmas music canon. Another notable work by Friedell is his "Requiem," which was written in memory of his father. The piece is a setting of the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead and features a full choir, soloists, and orchestra. The "Requiem" is a powerful and emotional work that showcases Friedell's skill as a composer. In addition to his work as a composer, Friedell was also a respected organist. He was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to improvise on the organ. He often performed recitals at churches and concert halls throughout the United States, and his performances were always well-received. Friedell's career was cut short when he died suddenly in 1958 at the age of 53. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by musicians and audiences around the world. His contributions to the world of classical music, particularly in the realm of choral music, have earned him a place among the great composers of the 20th century.
