Born on August 12, 1975, in Reykjavik, Iceland, Gunnar showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents, both music enthusiasts, recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion. Gunnar's musical journey began with his enrollment in the Reykjavik Music School, where he received formal training in piano and music theory. He quickly excelled in his studies and was soon recognized as a prodigious talent. At the age of 14, he won the Icelandic National Piano Competition, which marked the beginning of his professional career. In 1993, Gunnar moved to Germany to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. There, he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and pedagogue Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. Under Kämmerling's guidance, Gunnar honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the nuances of classical music. Gunnar's talent and hard work paid off when he won the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1998.
