Boris Goldstein was a renowned classical music artist who was born on April 18, 1922, in Odessa, Ukraine. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist who played in the Odessa Opera Orchestra. Boris showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He received his first lessons from his father and later studied with the renowned violinist David Oistrakh. In 1936, Boris and his family moved to Moscow, where he continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory. He studied with some of the most prominent violinists of the time, including Leonid Kogan and Yuri Yankelevich. Boris was a prodigious talent, and he won several awards and competitions during his time at the conservatory. After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory in 1941, Boris began his professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented violinists of his generation, and he was invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Boris's most significant performances was his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1951. He performed the Brahms Violin Concerto under the baton of Wilhelm Furtwängler, and the performance was met with critical acclaim. Boris went on to perform with the Berlin Philharmonic several more times throughout his career, and he developed a close relationship with the orchestra. In addition to his solo career, Boris was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Moscow Trio, which was one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of the time. The trio performed together for over 20 years and recorded several acclaimed albums. Boris was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded a wide range of repertoire throughout his career. He recorded the complete works of Bach for solo violin, as well as the complete works of Beethoven for violin and piano. He also recorded several works by contemporary composers, including Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Throughout his career, Boris received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1966, and he was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1972. He was also a recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1978. Boris continued to perform and record well into his later years. He passed away on April 15, 1987, in Lucerne, Switzerland, at the age of 64.
