Founded in 1950, the orchestra has become one of the most respected and sought-after opera orchestras in the world, performing regularly at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and on tour throughout Canada and internationally. The Canadian Opera Company Orchestra was founded by Nicholas Goldschmidt, a British conductor who had previously worked with the Royal Opera House in London. Goldschmidt was brought to Toronto by the Canadian Opera Company's founder, Herman Geiger-Torel, to help establish the company's orchestra. Goldschmidt served as the orchestra's first music director, and under his leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Over the years, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Richard Bradshaw, who served as the company's music director from 1994 until his untimely death in 2007. Bradshaw was widely regarded as one of the most talented and innovative conductors of his generation, and he played a key role in shaping the orchestra's sound and repertoire. Today, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra is led by Johannes Debus, a German conductor who has been the company's music director since 2009. Debus is known for his dynamic and expressive conducting style, and he has been praised for his ability to bring out the best in the orchestra's musicians. The Canadian Opera Company Orchestra is made up of some of the most talented musicians in Canada and around the world. The orchestra's members come from a variety of backgrounds and have trained at some of the most prestigious music schools and conservatories in the world. Many of the orchestra's musicians also perform with other major orchestras and ensembles, both in Canada and internationally. Over the years, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra has been involved in a number of major performances and productions. One of the orchestra's most notable achievements was its participation in the world premiere of Harry Somers' opera "Louis Riel" in 1967. The opera, which tells the story of the Métis leader Louis Riel and his struggle for justice and recognition, was a landmark event in Canadian cultural history, and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra played a key role in bringing the work to life. In addition to its work in the opera house, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra has also been involved in a number of other major performances and collaborations. The orchestra has performed with some of the world's most renowned soloists and conductors, including Plácido Domingo, Bryn Terfel, and Sir Andrew Davis. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of other major arts organizations, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Ballet of Canada, and the Canadian Stage Company. The Canadian Opera Company Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades over the years for its outstanding performances and contributions to the world of classical music. In 2014, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious National Arts Centre Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the performing arts in Canada. The orchestra has also been recognized with a number of Juno Awards, Canada's top music awards, for its recordings of opera and classical music.More....
