Gregory Porter is a Grammy Award-winning jazz and soul singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born on November 4, 1971, in Sacramento, California, to a mother who was a minister and a father who was a factory worker. Porter grew up in Bakersfield, California, where he was raised by his mother and his seven siblings. Porter's love for music began at an early age, as he was exposed to gospel music in his mother's church. He started singing in the church choir and later joined a local jazz group. He attended San Diego State University, where he played football on a scholarship, but he eventually left to pursue a career in music. In the early 1990s, Porter moved to New York City, where he worked as a chef and performed in small jazz clubs. He released his debut album, "Water," in 2010, which received critical acclaim and established him as a rising star in the jazz world. Porter's breakthrough came in 2013 with the release of his third album, "Liquid Spirit," which won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. The album featured Porter's signature blend of jazz, soul, and gospel music, and showcased his powerful and emotive voice. Since then, Porter has released several more successful albums, including "Take Me to the Alley" (2016), which won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, and "Nat King Cole & Me" (2017), a tribute to the legendary singer and pianist. Porter has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and the Hollywood Bowl. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Herbie Hancock, Van Morrison, and Jamie Cullum. In addition to his music career, Porter has also acted in several films and television shows, including "The Get Down" and "Blue Bloods." Throughout his career, Porter has received numerous awards and accolades for his music, including the Echo Jazz Award, the MOBO Award, and the Jazz FM Award for International Jazz Artist of the Year. Despite his success, Porter remains humble and grounded, and is known for his warm and engaging personality both on and off stage. He continues to inspire audiences around the world with his soulful and heartfelt music, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz singers of his generation.
