Hubert Laws is a renowned American flutist and saxophonist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on November 10, 1939, in Houston, Texas, Laws grew up in a musical family. His mother played the piano, and his father was a saxophonist. Laws started playing the flute at the age of 15 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Laws attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied with renowned flutist Julius Baker. He graduated in 1960 and began his professional career as a member of the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He also played with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In the 1960s, Laws began to explore jazz and other genres of music. He played with jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea. He also recorded his first album, The Laws of Jazz, in 1964. The album featured Laws playing both the flute and saxophone and showcased his unique blend of classical and jazz styles. Laws continued to record and perform throughout the 1970s, releasing several successful albums, including Afro-Classic, The Rite of Spring, and Carnegie Hall. He also won several awards, including the DownBeat Critics Poll for Best Flutist in 1973 and 1974. He also released several successful albums, including Family, In the Beginning, and My Time Will Come. He also continued to receive recognition for his contributions to the world of music, including being inducted into the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters in 2011.
