He was the youngest of four siblings and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Zapata showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Zapata's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and composer, Manuel M. Ponce. Zapata's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. In 1968, Zapata was awarded a scholarship to study at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. He continued to excel in his studies and was awarded several prizes for his performances. In 1972, he graduated with honors and was awarded a diploma in piano performance. After completing his studies, Zapata began performing professionally and quickly gained a reputation as one of Mexico's most talented pianists. He performed extensively throughout Mexico and also toured internationally, performing in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Europe. One of Zapata's most significant performances was in 1975 when he performed at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. The Palacio de Bellas Artes is one of Mexico's most prestigious concert halls, and Zapata's performance was widely acclaimed. He received a standing ovation and was praised for his technical skill and emotional depth. Zapata continued to perform at the Palacio de Bellas Artes throughout his career and also performed at other prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to his performances, Zapata was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and also gave masterclasses and workshops throughout Mexico and internationally. Many of his students went on to become successful musicians in their own right. Zapata's talent and dedication to music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1980, he was awarded the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in Mexico, and in 1995, he was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico's highest honor for artists and intellectuals. Zapata's career was tragically cut short when he passed away on December 31, 2000, at the age of 50. He had been diagnosed with cancer earlier that year and had been undergoing treatment.
