The Extremadura Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in the Spanish region of Extremadura. The orchestra was founded in 2000 by the regional government of Extremadura with the aim of promoting classical music in the region and providing a platform for local musicians to showcase their talents. The orchestra is made up of around 70 musicians, many of whom are from Extremadura or have strong connections to the region. The ensemble is led by conductor and artistic director Jesús Amigo, who has been with the orchestra since its inception. Over the years, the Extremadura Symphony Orchestra has become known for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The orchestra has a diverse repertoire that includes works from the classical, romantic, and contemporary periods, as well as pieces by Spanish and Latin American composers. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the National Music Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in recognition of its contributions to the country's cultural life. The prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the Spanish music industry and is given annually to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the development of music in Spain. In recent years, the Extremadura Symphony Orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of classical music and explore new ways of engaging with audiences. The orchestra has launched several innovative projects, including a series of concerts that combine classical music with other art forms such as dance, theater, and visual art. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Extremadura Symphony Orchestra has remained active and has continued to perform and record music. In 2020, the orchestra released a new album titled "Música de Cine" (Film Music), which features arrangements of classic film scores by composers such as Ennio Morricone and John Williams. Overall, the Extremadura Symphony Orchestra has established itself as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Spain and a vital cultural institution in the region of Extremadura.
