The Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus is one of the most renowned classical music ensembles in the world. Founded in 1891, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra was founded by Theodore Thomas, a German-born conductor who had previously led the New York Philharmonic. Thomas was known for his innovative programming and his commitment to bringing classical music to a wider audience. He believed that music should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or education. Under Thomas's leadership, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra quickly established itself as one of the premier orchestras in the United States. The orchestra's first concert was held on October 16, 1891, at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. The program included works by Beethoven, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky, among others. Over the years, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been led by some of the most distinguished conductors in the world, including Fritz Reiner, Georg Solti, and Daniel Barenboim. Each of these conductors brought their own unique vision and style to the orchestra, helping to shape its sound and reputation. One of the highlights of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago. The orchestra played a series of concerts in the newly-built Orchestra Hall, which had been designed specifically for the orchestra. The concerts were a huge success, and helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as one of the finest in the world. In the years that followed, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra continued to build on its success. The orchestra performed regularly at Orchestra Hall, and also toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. The orchestra's recordings, which included works by composers such as Mahler, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky, were widely praised for their technical excellence and musical interpretation. In addition to its work as an orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra also has a chorus, which was founded in 1957. The chorus has performed with the orchestra on numerous occasions, and has also given its own concerts and recordings. The chorus has been led by several distinguished conductors, including Margaret Hillis and Duain Wolfe. One of the most significant moments in the history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus was the appointment of Georg Solti as music director in 1969. Solti was a Hungarian-born conductor who had previously led the Royal Opera House in London. He brought a new level of energy and intensity to the orchestra, and helped to establish it as one of the finest in the world. Under Solti's leadership, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus achieved numerous milestones. The orchestra won 31 Grammy Awards during Solti's tenure, more than any other orchestra in history. Solti also led the orchestra on several international tours, including a historic tour of China in 1979. Another significant moment in the history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus was the appointment of Daniel Barenboim as music director in 1991. Barenboim was an Israeli-born pianist and conductor who had previously led the Orchestre de Paris and the Berlin State Opera. He brought a new level of musical sophistication and intellectual depth to the orchestra, and helped to establish it as a leader in contemporary music.
