Mark Fewer is a renowned Canadian violinist, conductor, and educator who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born in Newfoundland, Canada, Fewer began playing the violin at the age of three and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music. Fewer's career as a professional musician began in the early 1990s when he joined the internationally acclaimed Canadian Brass as their first violinist. During his time with the group, Fewer performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians. In 1998, Fewer left the Canadian Brass to pursue a solo career, and he quickly established himself as one of Canada's most talented and versatile violinists. He has performed with many of the country's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Fewer's performances have been praised for their technical brilliance, musical sensitivity, and emotional depth. He has a particular affinity for contemporary music and has premiered many new works by Canadian composers. Fewer has also recorded several albums, including "In the Stillness," which features his own compositions and arrangements. In addition to his work as a performer, Fewer is also an accomplished conductor and educator. He has served as the concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and has conducted many orchestras across Canada and the United States. Fewer is also a dedicated educator and has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Toronto, the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He is currently the Director of the String Program at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music. Throughout his career, Fewer has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the classical music world. In 2005, he was awarded the Virginia Parker Prize by the Canada Council for the Arts, which recognizes outstanding young Canadian musicians. He has also been awarded the Prix Opus for "Concert of the Year" and the JUNO Award for "Classical Album of the Year." Fewer's dedication to his craft and his passion for music have made him one of Canada's most beloved and respected classical musicians. His performances continue to inspire audiences around the world, and his contributions to the classical music world will undoubtedly be felt for many years to come.
