Chris Paul Harman was a Canadian composer who was born on May 24, 1970, in Toronto, Ontario. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a singer. Harman began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He went on to study music at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After completing his undergraduate studies, Harman moved to Europe to further his musical education. He studied composition with renowned composers such as Brian Ferneyhough and Michael Finnissy at the University of Southampton in England. He also spent time in Germany, where he studied with Helmut Lachenmann at the Hochschule für Musik Stuttgart. Harman's early works were heavily influenced by the European avant-garde tradition, particularly the music of Ferneyhough and Lachenmann. His compositions were characterized by complex rhythms, intricate textures, and a focus on timbre and sound color. He also experimented with extended techniques, such as playing inside the piano and using unconventional instruments. One of Harman's early works, "Sextet," was premiered at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music in 1998. The piece was well-received and helped establish Harman as a rising star in the contemporary classical music scene. He went on to receive numerous commissions and performances from ensembles and festivals around the world. In the early 2000s, Harman's music began to evolve in new directions. He became interested in incorporating elements of popular music and jazz into his compositions, as well as exploring more traditional forms and structures. His works from this period, such as "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra" and "String Quartet No. 2," showcased a more lyrical and expressive side to his music. Harman's later works continued to explore new musical territories. He was particularly interested in the intersection of music and technology, and he incorporated electronic sounds and multimedia elements into his compositions. His piece "Echoes of Time" for orchestra and electronics, which premiered in 2015, was a prime example of this approach. Throughout his career, Harman received numerous awards and honors for his compositions. He was a recipient of the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music in 2008 and the Toronto Arts Foundation's Emerging Artist Award in 2011. He was also a finalist for the prestigious Gaudeamus Award in 2000. Tragically, Harman passed away on November 26, 2018, at the age of 48. His death was a great loss to the contemporary classical music community, as he was widely regarded as one of Canada's most talented and innovative composers. Despite his untimely passing, Harman's music continues to be performed and celebrated around the world. His legacy as a composer who pushed the boundaries of contemporary classical music lives on, and his influence can be heard in the works of many young composers today.
