His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Otto showed a keen interest in music and started playing the piano when he was just five years old. Otto's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Berlin Conservatory of Music when he was eight years old. He studied under the guidance of some of the most prominent music teachers of the time, including Wilhelm Kempff and Edwin Fischer. Otto's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became one of the most promising young musicians in Germany. In 1943, Otto's family was forced to flee Berlin due to the war. They moved to Switzerland, where Otto continued his music education at the Zurich Conservatory. Otto's time in Switzerland was a turning point in his career, as he was exposed to a wider range of music and had the opportunity to perform in public concerts.
