Role:EnsembleGenre:ChamberVocalPrism Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and innovative approach to music for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1994 by saxophonists Timothy McAllister, Zachary Shemon, Matthew Levy, and Taimur Sullivan, who were all students at the University of Michigan at the time. From the beginning, Prism Quartet set out to explore the full range of possibilities offered by the saxophone, a versatile instrument that is often overlooked in classical music. The quartet's repertoire includes works by contemporary composers as well as classical pieces, and they are known for their ability to seamlessly blend different styles and genres. One of the highlights of Prism Quartet's early career was their performance at the 1995 World Saxophone Congress in Valencia, Spain. This was the quartet's first international performance, and it helped to establish them as a rising force in the world of classical music. Over the years, Prism Quartet has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible with the saxophone. They have collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists, including jazz pianist Uri Caine, composer Steve Mackey, and choreographer Susan Marshall. One of the quartet's most notable collaborations was with the legendary composer and conductor Steve Reich. In 2016, Prism Quartet premiered Reich's new work "Pulse" at Carnegie Hall, earning rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Prism Quartet has also been recognized for their contributions to the world of classical music. In 2007, they were awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, and in 2014 they received the American Composers Forum Champion of New Music Award. Despite their many accomplishments, Prism Quartet remains committed to exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of classical music. They continue to tour and perform around the world, bringing their unique blend of classical and contemporary music to audiences everywhere.More....
