The Aurelia Saxophone Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1982 by four Dutch saxophonists who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the possibilities of the saxophone as a classical instrument. The founding members of the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet were Arno Bornkamp (soprano saxophone), Johan van der Linden (alto saxophone), Willem van Merwijk (tenor saxophone), and Niels Bijl (baritone saxophone). All four musicians had studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. From the beginning, the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet set out to expand the repertoire for saxophone quartet by commissioning new works from contemporary composers and arranging existing pieces for their ensemble. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and their ability to bring out the unique qualities of each member's instrument. One of the highlights of the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet's early career was their performance at the 1985 World Saxophone Congress in Nuremberg, Germany. This was a major international event that brought together saxophonists from around the world to share their music and ideas. The Aurelia Saxophone Quartet's performance was a sensation, and they were praised for their technical precision and musicality. Over the years, the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet has continued to perform at major festivals and concert halls around the world, including the Edinburgh Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall in New York. They have also collaborated with many other musicians and ensembles, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and the Kronos Quartet. One of the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet's most notable collaborations was with the composer Philip Glass. In 1995, Glass wrote a piece for the quartet called "Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra," which they premiered with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. The piece was a critical and commercial success, and it has since been performed by many other saxophone quartets around the world. In addition to their performances, the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released several albums on the Channel Classics label, including "Aurelia Plays Glass" and "Aurelia Saxophone Quartet Plays Piazzolla." These recordings have received critical acclaim and have helped to establish the quartet as one of the leading ensembles in the world of classical saxophone. Throughout their career, the members of the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet have also been dedicated teachers and mentors. They have taught at many music schools and conservatories around the world, including the Conservatory of Amsterdam, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and the University of Michigan. They have also given masterclasses and workshops for saxophonists of all levels, from beginners to professionals. In recognition of their contributions to the world of classical music, the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet has received many awards and honors. In 1995, they were awarded the Dutch Music Prize, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a musician in the Netherlands.
