The American Baroque Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of Baroque music. The ensemble was founded in 1995 by harpsichordist and conductor Mark Bailey, who sought to create a group that would explore the rich and varied repertoire of Baroque music. Bailey, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, had previously performed with a number of other Baroque ensembles, including the New York Collegium and the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra. He was joined in the founding of the American Baroque Ensemble by a group of other talented musicians, including violinist Cynthia Roberts, cellist Myron Lutzke, and flutist Sandra Miller. The ensemble quickly established itself as one of the leading Baroque ensembles in the United States, with a reputation for excellence in both performance and scholarship. The group's members were all highly trained and experienced musicians, with a deep understanding of the historical context and performance practices of Baroque music. Over the years, the American Baroque Ensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States and abroad, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. The group has also been featured on numerous recordings, including several critically acclaimed albums for the Naxos label. One of the highlights of the American Baroque Ensemble's career was its performance at the Boston Early Music Festival in 2003. The festival, which is one of the largest and most prestigious early music events in the world, featured the ensemble in a program of music by Handel, Vivaldi, and other Baroque composers. The American Baroque Ensemble has also been recognized for its contributions to the field of early music. In 2006, the group was awarded the Noah Greenberg Award by the American Musicological Society, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the performance of early music. Despite its many accomplishments, the American Baroque Ensemble remains committed to its mission of exploring and sharing the rich and varied repertoire of Baroque music. The group continues to perform regularly, both in the United States and abroad, and to record new and exciting interpretations of Baroque masterpieces.
