Born on November 28, 1952, in Bronxville, New York, Friesen grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Friesen started playing the cello at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Friesen attended the Yale School of Music, where he studied with Aldo Parisot, one of the most prominent cello teachers of the 20th century. Friesen's cello playing was a key element of the group's sound, and he became known for his improvisational skills and his ability to blend different musical styles. Friesen's work with the Paul Winter Consort led to a number of high-profile performances, including concerts at the White House and the United Nations. The group also won several Grammy Awards for their albums, including "Common Ground" and "Spanish Angel." In addition to his work with the Paul Winter Consort, Friesen has also released several solo albums. His first solo album, "In the Shade of Angels," was released in 1986 and featured a mix of original compositions and arrangements of classical pieces. Friesen's solo work has been praised for its emotional depth and its ability to blend different musical styles. Friesen has also collaborated with a number of other musicians throughout his career. He has worked with jazz pianist Chick Corea, folk singer Arlo Guthrie, and classical guitarist Eliot Fisk, among others. Friesen's collaborations have resulted in a wide range of musical styles, from classical to jazz to folk. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Friesen is also a respected music educator. He has taught at the Berklee College of Music since 1985 and has also taught at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Tanglewood Music Center. Friesen's teaching has focused on improvisation and the integration of different musical styles. In 1996, he was awarded a Grammy Award for his work on the album "Paul Winter Consort: Spanish Angel." He has also received several awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
