Nancy Rumbel is a renowned American musician who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on December 8, 1951, in Seattle, Washington, Rumbel grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer, so it was only natural that Rumbel would develop a love for music at a young age. Rumbel began playing the piano when she was just five years old, and by the time she was in high school, she had already become an accomplished musician. She played in the school band and orchestra, and also performed in local jazz clubs. After graduating from high school, Rumbel attended the University of Washington, where she studied music theory and composition. In the early 1970s, Rumbel became interested in the oboe, and began studying the instrument with renowned oboist Ray Still. She quickly became proficient on the oboe, and began performing with local orchestras and ensembles. In 1978, Rumbel joined the Paul Winter Consort, a world music group that blended jazz, classical, and folk music. Rumbel's unique sound and style quickly made her a standout member of the group, and she remained with the Paul Winter Consort for over 20 years. During her time with the Paul Winter Consort, Rumbel recorded numerous albums and performed all over the world. She also collaborated with other musicians, including pianist David Lanz, with whom she recorded the popular album "Desert Vision." Rumbel's unique sound on the oboe, which blended classical and world music influences, made her a sought-after musician in the recording industry. In addition to her work with the Paul Winter Consort, Rumbel has also recorded several solo albums. Her first solo album, "Notes from the Tree of Life," was released in 1990 and featured Rumbel's original compositions for oboe and English horn. The album was well-received by critics and helped establish Rumbel as a solo artist in her own right. Over the years, Rumbel has received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 1990, she was awarded a Grammy Award for her work on the Paul Winter Consort's album "Spanish Angel." She has also been nominated for several other Grammy Awards, including Best New Age Album and Best World Music Album. In addition to her work as a musician, Rumbel is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at several universities and music schools, including the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and the University of Oregon. She has also conducted master classes and workshops all over the world, helping to inspire and educate the next generation of musicians. Today, Nancy Rumbel continues to perform and record music, and remains a beloved figure in the world of classical music. Her unique sound and style, which blend classical and world music influences, have made her a true innovator in the field. Whether performing with the Paul Winter Consort, recording solo albums, or teaching and mentoring young musicians, Rumbel's passion for music and dedication to her craft continue to inspire and delight audiences all over the world.
