He was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, which was then part of the Russian Empire, on August 20, 1912. His father, Meshadi Jamil Amirov, was a famous Azerbaijani composer and tar player, and his mother, Fatma Khanum, was a singer. Niyazi grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a young age. Niyazi began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons from his mother. He later studied at the Tbilisi Conservatory, where he learned to play the violin and the cello. After completing his studies, he returned to Azerbaijan and joined the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra as a cellist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the orchestra's principal cellist. In 1937, Niyazi was appointed the conductor of the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for over 40 years. He was known for his innovative approach to conducting and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. He was also a prolific composer and wrote over 200 works, including operas, ballets, symphonies, and chamber music. One of Niyazi's most significant achievements was his contribution to the development of Azerbaijani classical music. He was instrumental in incorporating traditional Azerbaijani music into classical compositions, creating a unique sound that was both modern and rooted in tradition. He also worked to promote Azerbaijani music internationally and was a frequent guest conductor in Europe and Asia. Niyazi's career was marked by numerous highlights, including his performances of Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov's opera "Leyli and Majnun" in 1947. The opera, which tells the story of a tragic love affair, was a huge success and helped to establish Niyazi's reputation as a conductor. He went on to conduct many other operas, including "Koroghlu" and "Shah Ismayil" by Azerbaijani composer Gara Garayev. In addition to his work as a conductor and composer, Niyazi was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory and mentored many young musicians who went on to have successful careers in music. Niyazi received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1965 and the Order of Lenin in 1972. He was also awarded the Shohrat Order, the highest civilian honor in Azerbaijan, in 1982. Niyazi passed away on August 2, 1984, at the age of 71.
