Born in 1954 in Victoria, British Columbia, Johnston grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer. From a young age, Johnston showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Johnston's passion for music led her to pursue a career in percussion. She studied at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance. She then went on to complete a Master of Music degree at the University of Michigan. Throughout her career, Johnston has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Sir Andrew Davis, Bramwell Tovey, and Peter Oundjian. One of the highlights of Johnston's career was her performance at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. She was chosen to perform the world premiere of John Wyre's "The Spirit Garden," a piece that was commissioned for the opening ceremony of the games. The performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world and received critical acclaim. In addition to her performances with orchestras, Johnston is also an accomplished soloist. She has performed solo recitals at many prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
