David Jaeger was a Canadian composer, broadcaster, and writer who was born on May 28, 1947, in Toronto, Ontario. He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Jaeger began studying piano and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto when he was just six years old. Jaeger continued his musical education at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition in 1970. He then went on to study at the University of California, San Diego, where he earned a Master of Music degree in composition in 1972. After completing his studies, Jaeger returned to Toronto and began working as a freelance composer and music journalist. He wrote for a number of publications, including The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, and The Canadian Music Journal. He also worked as a producer and host for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), where he produced a number of radio programs on classical music. Jaeger's compositions were heavily influenced by his interest in world music and his travels to countries such as India, Indonesia, and Japan. He often incorporated elements of these musical traditions into his works, creating a unique and eclectic style. One of Jaeger's most notable works is his opera, "The Mother of Us All," which was commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company and premiered in 1992. The opera tells the story of suffragette Susan B. Anthony and her fight for women's rights in the United States. The work received critical acclaim and was praised for its innovative use of electronic music and its incorporation of feminist themes. Another notable work by Jaeger is his "Concerto for Viola and Orchestra," which was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 1985. The concerto features a solo viola accompanied by a full orchestra and is known for its lush harmonies and intricate rhythms. In addition to his work as a composer, Jaeger was also a dedicated educator. He taught composition and music theory at the University of Toronto and was a mentor to many young composers. He also served as the president of the Canadian League of Composers from 1990 to 1992. Jaeger's contributions to the Canadian music scene were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 2010 for his contributions to Canadian music and culture. He also received the Canadian Music Centre's Friends of Canadian Music Award in 2009 and the Toronto Arts Award for Music in 2002. Sadly, Jaeger passed away on September 6, 2017, at the age of 70. However, his legacy as a composer, broadcaster, and educator continues to inspire and influence musicians and music lovers around the world.
