Born on February 16, 1948, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Cohen began playing the piano at the age of three and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Cohen's musical education began at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied with Jacques Klein. He later continued his studies in the United States, first at the Juilliard School in New York City and then at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. At Indiana University, Cohen studied with Menahem Pressler, a renowned pianist and founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio. Cohen's career as a concert pianist began in the 1970s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a performer of exceptional skill and sensitivity. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many distinguished conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, and Lorin Maazel. One of Cohen's most notable performances was his 1981 debut at the Royal Festival Hall in London, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Cohen's technical mastery and musical sensitivity. Since then, Cohen has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Berlin Philharmonie. Cohen has also been recognized for his recordings, which include works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff, among others. His recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes was particularly well-received, and was named one of the best classical recordings of 2005 by The New York Times. In addition to his performing and recording career, Cohen has also been active as a teacher. He has taught at many institutions, including the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. In 1972, he won first prize at the Vianna da Motta International Music Competition in Lisbon, Portugal. He was also a prize winner at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1977, and was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1981. In 2014, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Brazilian government in recognition of his contributions to the arts.
