Artist Info
Petre Munteanu was a Romanian violinist and conductor who was born on December 22, 1949, in Bucharest, Romania. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist in the Romanian National Opera. Munteanu began playing the violin at the age of five, and by the time he was eight, he was already performing in public. Munteanu studied at the George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest, where he was a student of the renowned violinist and pedagogue Stefan Gheorghiu. He continued his studies at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he studied with the violinist and conductor Ion Voicu. Munteanu graduated from the conservatory in 1972, and he went on to win several international competitions, including the Paganini Competition in Genoa, Italy, in 1973. Munteanu began his professional career as a soloist with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, and he quickly established himself as one of Romania's leading violinists. He made his international debut in 1975, when he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. This performance was a major breakthrough for Munteanu, and it led to many other engagements with major orchestras around the world. Munteanu was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performed. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was also a champion of contemporary music, and he premiered many works by Romanian composers. Munteanu was a frequent guest artist at major music festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Festival. He also performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a soloist, Munteanu was also a respected conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Romanian National Radio Orchestra from 1987 to 1990, and he also conducted many other orchestras around the world. Munteanu received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1980, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Romanian government, and in 1991, he was awarded the title of "Artist of the People" by the same government. He was also a recipient of the George Enescu Prize, Romania's highest honor for musicians. Tragically, Munteanu's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1991 at the age of 41. He died of a heart attack while on tour in Japan. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, and he is remembered as one of Romania's greatest musicians.More....
