Role:Conductor PerformerPeriod:RomanticModernGenre:ChoralConcertoOperaMarc Andreae is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a conductor, composer, and violinist. Born on August 28, 1940, in Basel, Switzerland, Andreae grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Paul Andreae, was a composer and conductor, while his mother, Margarete Andreae, was a pianist. This musical background played a significant role in shaping Andreae's interest in music from a young age. Andreae began his musical journey by learning the violin at the age of six. He showed exceptional talent and was soon performing in public concerts. At the age of 12, he made his debut as a soloist with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. This performance marked the beginning of his career as a violinist. Andreae continued his musical education at the Basel Conservatory, where he studied violin with Max Rostal and composition with Pierre Boulez. He also attended masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Yehudi Menuhin and Isaac Stern. During this time, Andreae developed a deep understanding of music theory and composition, which would later influence his work as a conductor and composer. In 1963, Andreae joined the Basel Symphony Orchestra as a violinist. He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed concertmaster in 1967. During his time with the orchestra, Andreae also began conducting, and in 1970, he was appointed the orchestra's principal conductor. This marked the beginning of his career as a conductor. Andreae's tenure as the principal conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra was marked by several notable performances and recordings. He conducted the orchestra in performances of works by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler, and also championed the music of contemporary composers such as Boulez and Stockhausen. Under his leadership, the orchestra gained a reputation for its precision and musicality. In 1978, Andreae was appointed the principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the UK. This marked a significant milestone in his career, as it was his first appointment as a conductor outside of Switzerland. During his time with the orchestra, Andreae conducted several notable performances, including a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, which was broadcast on BBC television. Andreae's work as a conductor also extended to the opera stage. He conducted several productions at the Royal Opera House in London, including productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro. He also conducted productions at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the English National Opera. In addition to his work as a conductor, Andreae is also a prolific composer. He has written works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions are characterized by their intricate harmonies and use of unconventional instrumentation. Some of his notable works include the Symphony No. 1, the String Quartet No. 1, and the Piano Sonata No. 1. Throughout his career, Andreae has received several awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1987, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to music. He has also received honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Southampton and the University of Basel. Today, Andreae continues to be an active musician, conducting and composing music.More....
