He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged Norman to pursue his musical interests from a young age. Norman began playing the piano when he was just five years old, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He began taking lessons with a local piano teacher, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in local concerts and competitions. After completing his secondary education, Norman decided to pursue a career in music and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music in London. There, he studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers in the world, including Maria João Pires and Alfred Brendel. During his time at the Royal Academy of Music, Norman began to gain recognition for his exceptional talent as a pianist. He won several prestigious awards, including the Royal Academy of Music's highest honor, the Queen's Prize, and the International Piano Competition in Leeds. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Norman began to perform professionally, both as a soloist and as part of various ensembles. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and versatile pianists of his generation, and he was in high demand for concerts and recordings. One of the highlights of Norman's career was his performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1978. He played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the London Symphony Orchestra, and the performance was widely acclaimed as one of the greatest interpretations of the piece ever heard. Norman continued to perform and record throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and he collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras in the world. He also began to teach, and he was a professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music for many years. In addition to his work as a pianist, Norman was also a composer and arranger. He wrote several pieces for piano, as well as orchestral works and chamber music. His compositions were often inspired by his travels around the world, and he was particularly interested in the music of Asia and Africa. Throughout his career, Norman received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1998, and he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal in 2003. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Society of Arts. Norman continued to perform and teach until his death on March 12, 2015, at the age of 69.
