He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Bates showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Bates received his formal music education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of some of the most renowned classical musicians of the time. He graduated with honors in 1997 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Bates made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall in 1998, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2, also known as the "Moonlight Sonata." This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career for Bates. Over the years, Bates has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Bates' most memorable performances was his rendition of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2005. The performance was hailed as a masterpiece, with critics praising Bates' technical prowess and emotional depth. Bates has also been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2001, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music.
