Born in New York City in 1946, Block began playing the piano at a young age and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the most distinguished teachers of his time, including Rosina Lhévinne, Leon Fleisher, and Rudolf Serkin. Block's early career was marked by a series of impressive accomplishments. In 1966, he won the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which launched his career as a soloist. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Block's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy. The performance was hailed by critics as a triumph, and Block's interpretation of the concerto was praised for its sensitivity and depth. Block has also been recognized for his work as a chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading instrumentalists, including violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In 1981, he founded the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, which has become one of the most important chamber music organizations in the world. Throughout his career, Block has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1975, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He has also been awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. Despite his many accomplishments, Block remains dedicated to his craft and continues to perform and teach. He is currently a professor of piano at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, where he has inspired generations of young musicians with his passion and expertise.More....
