Fibonacci Sequence is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 by pianist Kathron Sturrock and flautist Jan Willem Nelleke. The ensemble is named after the famous mathematical sequence discovered by Leonardo Fibonacci in the 13th century, which has been used in music composition and other artistic fields. The founding members of Fibonacci Sequence were both accomplished musicians with extensive experience in the classical music world. Sturrock had studied at the Royal College of Music in London and had performed with many prestigious orchestras and ensembles, while Nelleke had studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and had performed with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and other leading Dutch ensembles. The ensemble's original lineup also included cellist Benjamin Hughes and violinist Jack Liebeck, both of whom were also highly regarded musicians with impressive resumes. Over the years, the ensemble has featured a rotating cast of musicians, but Sturrock and Nelleke have remained the core members and artistic directors. Fibonacci Sequence has become known for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances, which often feature lesser-known works by composers from a variety of eras and styles. The ensemble has also commissioned and premiered many new works by contemporary composers, including Sally Beamish, Howard Skempton, and Judith Weir. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was a concert at the Wigmore Hall in London in 2004, which featured the world premiere of a new work by composer Michael Berkeley. The concert was highly praised by critics and helped to establish Fibonacci Sequence as one of the leading chamber ensembles in the UK. In addition to its concert performances, Fibonacci Sequence has also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of chamber works by British composer Frank Bridge. The ensemble's recordings have been released on the Dutton Epoch and Deux-Elles labels. Over the years, Fibonacci Sequence has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2001, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Music Award, and in 2006, it was named Ensemble of the Year at the Classical Brit Awards. Despite its many achievements, Fibonacci Sequence remains committed to exploring new musical territory and pushing the boundaries of classical music. The ensemble continues to perform and record regularly, and its members are widely regarded as some of the most talented and innovative musicians in the UK.
