She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a well-known conductor. From a young age, Stella showed a keen interest in music, and her parents encouraged her to pursue her passion. She studied under some of the best teachers in Vienna, and by the age of 12, she had already given her first public performance. In 1938, when Stella was just 15 years old, her family was forced to flee Austria due to the Nazi occupation. They settled in the United States, where Stella continued her musical studies. She attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Rosina Lhévinne. Stella's talent continued to flourish, and she soon became a sought-after performer. She made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 1944, and her performance was met with critical acclaim. She went on to perform at many other prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
