Pampanini studied at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and made her operatic debut in 1914 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome as Musetta in Puccini's La bohème. Pampanini quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young sopranos in Italy. She was known for her powerful voice, dramatic intensity, and stunning stage presence. In 1916, she made her debut at La Scala in Milan as Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto. The performance was a huge success, and Pampanini became a star overnight.
