The Fauré Quartett is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1995 in Karlsruhe, Germany. The quartet is named after the French composer Gabriel Fauré, who is known for his contributions to the development of chamber music. The Fauré Quartett consists of four members: Erika Geldsetzer on violin, Sascha Frömbling on viola, Konstantin Heidrich on cello, and Dirk Mommertz on piano. The quartet's members met while studying at the Karlsruhe University of Music, and they quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music. They began performing together as the Fauré Quartett in 1995, and their first major performance was at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 1996. The quartet's unique sound and dynamic performances quickly gained them a following, and they began to receive invitations to perform at major music festivals and concert halls around the world. One of the Fauré Quartett's most notable performances was at the 2006 Salzburg Festival, where they performed a program of works by Mozart, Schumann, and Brahms. The quartet's performance was praised for its technical precision and emotional depth, and it helped to establish the quartet as one of the leading chamber music ensembles in the world. In addition to their performances, the Fauré Quartett has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. Their 2006 album, "Popsongs," which features arrangements of popular songs by artists such as Radiohead and Björk, was a commercial and critical success. The album received a German Record Critics' Award and was nominated for an Echo Award, one of the most prestigious music awards in Germany. The Fauré Quartett has also collaborated with a number of other musicians and artists throughout their career. In 2010, they collaborated with the German singer-songwriter Max Raabe on the album "Heute Nacht oder nie," which features arrangements of classic songs from the 1920s and 1930s. The album was a commercial success and received a Gold certification in Germany. In addition to their collaborations with other musicians, the Fauré Quartett has also commissioned and premiered a number of new works by contemporary composers. One of their most notable commissions was "The Four Elements," a suite of four pieces by the German composer Jörg Widmann. The suite was premiered by the Fauré Quartett in 2012 and has since been performed by other ensembles around the world. Throughout their career, the Fauré Quartett has remained committed to exploring the boundaries of chamber music and bringing new audiences to the genre. Their unique sound and dynamic performances have earned them a reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting chamber music ensembles in the world.
