Petri Kumela is a Finnish classical guitarist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative interpretations of classical guitar repertoire. Born in Helsinki in 1971, Kumela began playing the guitar at the age of seven and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several renowned guitarists in Finland, including Jukka Savijoki and Timo Korhonen, before pursuing further studies in Germany and Spain. Kumela's early career was marked by a series of impressive performances and competition wins. In 1993, he won first prize at the Nordic Guitar Competition in Oulu, Finland, and the following year he was awarded the prestigious Finnish State Prize for Music. In 1995, he won the International Guitar Competition in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic, cementing his reputation as one of the most promising young guitarists of his generation. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Kumela continued to perform extensively throughout Europe and Asia, collaborating with a wide range of musicians and composers. He has premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, and has recorded several critically acclaimed albums of classical guitar repertoire. One of Kumela's most notable performances came in 2006, when he was invited to perform at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in London. The concert, which featured works by Bach, Sor, and Piazzolla, was widely praised for Kumela's technical mastery and expressive playing. The following year, he was invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, where he gave a solo recital that was hailed as one of the highlights of the festival. In addition to his performing career, Kumela is also a respected teacher and mentor to young guitarists.
