He was born on October 9, 1927, in the city of Vilnius, Lithuania. Sondeckis was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. From a young age, Sondeckis showed a keen interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Sondeckis received his formal music education at the Lithuanian Academy of Music in Vilnius, where he studied under the tutelage of the renowned cellist and pedagogue, Mstislav Rostropovich. After completing his studies, Sondeckis began his career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras in Lithuania and other parts of the Soviet Union. In 1955, Sondeckis was appointed as the principal cellist of the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for over a decade. During this time, he also began to develop his skills as a conductor, and in 1963, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra. Under Sondeckis's leadership, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra gained international recognition and became one of the most respected chamber orchestras in the world. Sondeckis's conducting style was characterized by his attention to detail, his ability to bring out the best in his musicians, and his deep understanding of the music he was conducting. Throughout his career, Sondeckis conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Rostropovich, Yehudi Menuhin, and Gidon Kremer. One of the highlights of Sondeckis's career was his performance at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, where he conducted the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Mozart's Symphony No. 40. The performance was widely praised, and Sondeckis was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for his contribution to the arts. Sondeckis was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky are considered to be some of the finest interpretations of these works. He received numerous awards for his recordings, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Edison Award. In addition to his work as a conductor and cellist, Sondeckis was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Music for many years and was a frequent guest lecturer at music schools and conservatories around the world.
