The Metropolitan Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2009 in Sydney, Australia. The orchestra was established with the aim of providing a platform for young and talented musicians to showcase their skills and to promote classical music in the community. The founding members of the orchestra were Sarah-Grace Williams, the current Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, and her husband, Martin Portus, who is the orchestra's Executive Director. Sarah-Grace Williams is an accomplished conductor and composer who has worked with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Martin Portus is a music journalist and critic who has written extensively about classical music. The Metropolitan Orchestra has grown significantly since its inception and now comprises over 100 musicians, including some of Australia's most talented young instrumentalists. The orchestra's members come from diverse backgrounds and have studied at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. The Metropolitan Orchestra has performed at some of Australia's most prestigious venues, including the Sydney Opera House, the City Recital Hall, and the Angel Place Recital Hall. The orchestra has also collaborated with some of Australia's leading artists, including the singer-songwriter Katie Noonan and the actor John Waters. One of the highlights of the Metropolitan Orchestra's career was its performance at the 2014 Helpmann Awards, which are Australia's premier performing arts awards. The orchestra performed a medley of songs from the musicals Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera, which received a standing ovation from the audience. The Metropolitan Orchestra has also been recognized for its outstanding performances and has won several awards, including the 2015 APRA AMCOS Art Music Award for Excellence in a Regional Area. The orchestra was also a finalist in the 2016 Australian Event Awards in the category of Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event. In addition to its performances, the Metropolitan Orchestra is committed to promoting classical music in the community and to providing opportunities for young musicians. The orchestra runs a number of education programs, including the Young Composer of the Year competition, which encourages young composers to create new works for the orchestra.
