Born on August 22, 1953, in Toronto, Canada, Stilwell grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer, so it was only natural that Stilwell would develop an interest in music from a young age. Stilwell began her musical training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she studied voice and piano. She later went on to study at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. After completing her undergraduate studies, Stilwell continued her education at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with the renowned mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne. Stilwell's career as a professional musician began in the early 1980s when she made her debut with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto. She quickly established herself as a rising star in the opera world, and her performances were praised for their emotional depth and technical skill.
