Ronald Lowry is a renowned cellist and music educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on August 12, 1952, in New York City, Lowry grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Lowry started playing the cello at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Lowry received his formal music education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of Leonard Rose, one of the most celebrated cellists of the 20th century. Lowry graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1974 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music, where he studied with Aldo Parisot. Lowry's career as a professional cellist began in 1976 when he joined the New York Philharmonic as a member of the cello section. He remained with the orchestra for six years before leaving to pursue a solo career. During his time with the New York Philharmonic, Lowry had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned conductors of the time, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Pierre Boulez. Lowry's solo career took off in the early 1980s when he won the prestigious Naumburg International Cello Competition. The competition, which is held every three years, is one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world and has launched the careers of many successful musicians. Lowry's win at the Naumburg Competition brought him international recognition and led to numerous solo engagements with major orchestras around the world. Throughout his career, Lowry has performed with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, and Simon Rattle. In addition to his solo career, Lowry has also been an active chamber musician. He has been a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1987 and has performed with many other chamber music ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet and the Emerson Quartet. Lowry's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to his win at the Naumburg Competition, he has also been the recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship, and the Chamber Music America Lifetime Achievement Award.
