The E.I.A.R. Symphony Orchestra Turin, also known as the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, is a classical music ensemble based in Turin, Italy. The orchestra was founded in 1931 by the Italian national broadcasting company, Ente Italiano per le Audizioni Radiofoniche (E.I.A.R.), which later became Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI). The orchestra's founding was part of a larger effort by the Italian government to promote classical music and culture through radio broadcasts. The E.I.A.R. Symphony Orchestra Turin was one of several orchestras established by the government during this time, but it quickly became one of the most prominent and respected ensembles in Italy. Over the years, the orchestra has had many notable conductors and musicians. Some of the most prominent conductors include Mario Rossi, Sergiu Celibidache, and Gianandrea Noseda. The orchestra has also worked with many famous soloists, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Salvatore Accardo, and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. One of the orchestra's most significant achievements was its participation in the 1956 Venice Biennale, where it performed works by Italian composers such as Luigi Dallapiccola and Goffredo Petrassi. The orchestra's performance was widely praised, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading orchestras in Italy. In the 1960s and 1970s, the orchestra continued to perform at major festivals and venues throughout Italy and Europe. It also began to record extensively, releasing albums of works by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. In the 1980s and 1990s, the orchestra faced some financial difficulties, but it continued to perform and record. In 1994, it was renamed the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, reflecting its status as the national orchestra of Italy. In recent years, the orchestra has continued to perform at major festivals and venues throughout Italy and Europe. It has also collaborated with contemporary composers and performers, including jazz pianist Stefano Bollani and composer Ennio Morricone. The E.I.A.R. Symphony Orchestra Turin has received many awards and honors over the years. In 1957, it was awarded the prestigious Premio Italia for its radio broadcasts. In 1988, it was awarded the Premio Abbiati, one of the most prestigious awards for classical music in Italy. In 2011, it was awarded the Premio Franco Abbiati for its recording of works by composer Giuseppe Martucci. Overall, the E.I.A.R. Symphony Orchestra Turin has played an important role in the promotion and preservation of classical music in Italy. Its performances and recordings have helped to establish it as one of the leading orchestras in the country, and its legacy continues to inspire and influence musicians and audiences around the world.
