Born on December 2, 1933, in London, England, Deller was the son of Alfred Deller, a celebrated countertenor who was instrumental in reviving the popularity of the countertenor voice in the mid-20th century. Growing up in a musical family, Deller was exposed to classical music from a young age. He began singing as a boy soprano in the choir of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, where he developed a love for choral music. He later studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he honed his skills as a countertenor. Deller made his professional debut as a countertenor in 1957, performing in a production of Handel's "Messiah" at the Royal Festival Hall in London. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading countertenors of his generation, known for his clear, pure tone and impeccable technique. Throughout his career, Deller performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Neville Marriner, and Sir Simon Rattle. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of Baroque music, and was a frequent performer of works by Handel, Bach, and Purcell. One of Deller's most notable performances was his rendition of Handel's "Messiah" at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1966. The performance was widely praised for its clarity and precision, and cemented Deller's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Handel's music. In addition to his work as a countertenor, Deller was also an accomplished conductor. He founded the Deller Consort in 1950, which specialized in performing Renaissance and Baroque music. The group quickly gained a following, and went on to perform at some of the world's leading concert halls and festivals. Deller's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1979, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music, and in 1994 he was awarded the Queen's Medal for Music. Despite his many accomplishments, Deller remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his career. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his unwavering commitment to excellence, and was widely respected by his peers and colleagues.
