Period:BaroqueClassicalGenre:ConcertoSymphonyI Musici di San Marco is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1952 in Venice, Italy. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music, and has gained international recognition for its virtuosic playing and historically informed interpretations. The founding members of I Musici di San Marco were a group of young musicians who were studying at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice. The group was led by violinist Felix Ayo, and included other talented musicians such as violinist Roberto Michelucci, cellist Francesco Strano, and harpsichordist Antonio Pocaterra. The ensemble took its name from the famous Basilica di San Marco in Venice, which was known for its rich musical tradition. In the early years of the ensemble, I Musici di San Marco performed primarily in Italy, but quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional playing. In 1954, the ensemble made their international debut at the Edinburgh Festival, where they received critical acclaim for their performances of works by Vivaldi, Corelli, and Bach. This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful international career for the ensemble. Over the years, I Musici di San Marco has undergone several changes in membership, but has maintained its commitment to historically informed performance practices. The ensemble has recorded extensively, and has won numerous awards for their recordings, including several Grammy Awards. One of the highlights of I Musici di San Marco's career was their performance at the 1960 Salzburg Festival, where they performed a program of works by Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque music. In addition to their performances of Baroque music, I Musici di San Marco has also gained recognition for their performances of Classical and early Romantic music. In 1972, the ensemble performed a program of works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven at the Royal Festival Hall in London, which was hailed as a triumph by critics and audiences alike. Throughout their long and illustrious career, I Musici di San Marco has continued to inspire audiences with their virtuosic playing and commitment to historical accuracy. The ensemble has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Today, I Musici di San Marco continues to perform and record, and remains one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world. Their legacy of excellence and dedication to historical accuracy has inspired generations of musicians, and will continue to do so for many years to come.More....
