Anaïs Chen is a Taiwanese-American classical pianist who has gained international recognition for her virtuosic performances and musical sensitivity. Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1994, Chen began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Her parents, both music lovers, recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Chen's early musical education was rigorous and comprehensive. She studied with some of the most renowned piano teachers in Taiwan, including Ching-Yun Hu and Hung-Kuan Chen. At the age of 12, she won first prize in the Taiwan National Piano Competition, which marked the beginning of her professional career as a pianist. In 2008, Chen moved to the United States to continue her musical studies. She enrolled in the pre-college division of the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky. During her time at Juilliard, Chen won numerous awards and competitions, including the Juilliard Pre-College Concerto Competition and the New York International Piano Competition. After completing her pre-college studies at Juilliard, Chen went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with Robert McDonald. She then pursued a Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Boris Berman. Chen's career as a professional pianist took off in 2016, when she won first prize in the prestigious Montreal International Musical Competition. This competition, which is held every three years, attracts some of the most talented young pianists from around the world. Chen's victory was a major milestone in her career, and it brought her to the attention of music lovers and critics worldwide. Since winning the Montreal competition, Chen has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. She has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, and the China Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also given recitals at major concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Verbier Festival. Chen's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by many of the greatest composers in the classical tradition. She is particularly noted for her interpretations of the music of Franz Liszt, whose virtuosic and emotionally charged compositions are a favorite of hers. She has also championed the music of contemporary composers, including Kaija Saariaho and Thomas Adès. In addition to her performing career, Chen is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Yale School of Music. She is committed to sharing her love of music with the next generation of musicians and helping them to develop their own artistic voices. Chen's achievements as a pianist have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to her victory at the Montreal International Musical Competition, she has won first prize in the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, the Wideman International Piano Competition, and the New York Piano Competition.
